Funky Forest

Funky Forest is a great movie, though these cards are unrelated. I just wanted to draw some crazy garden/forest of hybrid things. Most of them are reversible, with one side showing night and the other showing day.

I have ideas for the number card, but I started feeling a little physically ill from staring at the computer screen all day. So I had to stop. For now.

Anyway, I'm not done sketching the actual card designs, but I'll have those by Wednesday. The two I have started are more refined versions of the assortment above. I'll continue in that manner. They're a little boring right now, but that will change. Since I have so many images to work with (and more on the way), I might just design an entire suit or two.

These dont look like cards yet but i have the basic aesthetic feel down and the look of each card. i have the king, queen, jack, ace of hearts, and just what a spade, club and heart will look like. I will probably add the heart, club, or spade digitally to the rest of the cards.

i'm going with a sort of roman theme for my cards...and i think the first page is the direction that i'm building with. i don't have all the cards laid out yet, but this gives some idea of where i'm heading. let me know what you think

I have a goofy little story to go with my cards...

The bard (Joker/entertainer) is telling the story of a battle between four nations.


The Emperor of Diamonds and his holy empire have instigated war on all other nations.


To avoid losing control of his small nation the Prince of Clubs (Jacks use to be princes) has allied his ailing army with the Emperor of Diamonds.



The General-Queen of Spades has brought her fleet of air ships from the north to fight the Diamonds.


The King of Hearts from the east has sent his most trusted spy (an ace) into battle to sabotage the Diamond army.


And here's the crappy back that doesn't look like anything....

So, for now I have these six sketches...I guess I'm going to use watercolor, or gouache
I'm still thinking about Jack, Ace and Joker. Since mine is generally simple like spot illustration, I thought it will be fun to do all the numbers...maybe not :( I'm planning to put some pattern on the K, Q, J, A, and Joker's background.

posting this just so I have something to show.
there's gonna be pattern somewhere/somehow. it'll be cool.. maybe (no sketches yet, wednesday, I swear) If I decide this looks like shit/isn't going to work I'll probably change my mind again.

D'espairsRay Deck

So my idea is to make a deck of cards after one of my favorite bands, D'espairsRay! Each suits corresponds with a specific style that the band has worn for a cd release or tour.



This is Hizumi, he's the vocals and he wears Garnet Style.



Annd Tsukasa is the queen (because he's the prettiest! yay!) and he's the drummer. He's wears White Style



ZERO is the jack and he wears the style for [Coll:set] and he's bass.



Karyu's silly and the guitarist and he wears the style for Liquidize, which would be the spade suit because i needed one.




the ace of spades. I couldn't just pick one of the band members because that would be unfair. So i used their name in a neat font. I'm gonna hand letter it later in a similar style...





annd the back. its gonna have a chain-link fence in the back for texture. And i dont have a number card yet. I'm still thinking on that. and all of the faces (not the joker) will have opposing images where that diagonal line is that i'm going to redraw not just digitally mirror it. And im still thinking on color.

Nordic Deck

So, I decided to do my deck based on Norse mythology. Instead of doing the regular Symbol +number/letter like on regular decks, I'm planning on doing the symbol and the Nordic rune, if they are letters, or a rune...ish looking number. I'm planning on having a border around the image where I'll write a little and see if I can't write it out in Nordic rune (i have the alphabet sitting around). Maybe. Either way, they'll probably have a border of sorts. They're going to be painted in gouache, leaning toward a single color (similar to how I did the onomotopoeia barfight that leaned towards red).


One of the Valkyrie (doesn't matter which one, really), descending on a battlefield. This is the Queen of Hearts. She's going to be in reds.

Thor clobbering some frost giants. Ace of clubs. My boy's going to be in blues.

This is the design so far for the back of the card. Yggdrasil, the World Tree, around which the entirety of the universe is structured. This will probably be in full color.
The eight of spades is Sleipnir, Odin's eight-legged horse. This will probably be in blue-greens with some purple.


Odin being eaten by Fenrisulfr during Ragnarok. This is the king of spades. It will probably be done in purply-reds or oranges.

Loki being punished for killing Balder. Basically he's tethered to three rocks while snake venom drips into his eyes. His wife is there to catch it in a wooden bowl, but she has to pour it out when it's full, so he's back in agony when that happens. Oh, his bindings are made from the innards of one of his sons, who was killed by his other son who was turned into a wolf to punish Loki. Man, so awesome. He'll probably be done in greens.

I haven't had a chance to do the Joker yet, but that will probably be Loki cutting the hair off of Thor's wife Sif.

So my idea is a bunch of "used to be" refreshments who are sitting and moping in an empty theatre. i am thinking about adding a cnn sign on the top of the illustration as if it's a screen shot of a cnn news coverage of the shift from theatre to ipod/home etc.
it will be in colour and gouache.

Let's try this again

So......updating early in hopes that people might comment turned out to be a bust. I talked to some people outside of the class in hopes that they'd have feedback, and made some changes. I didn't have time to color it again, but here's the black and white sketch. Just imagine the original colors on this one. Mostly I removed the top screen and put it lower, and added in a blackberry-type device that he's holding up there instead. I redrew some of the people to make them more a little more interesting, also.
