Ok, here's what I think. The half page is pretty boring. I wouldn't say the colors are depressing, but I think bright or no it doesnt really express anything to me. I do think though that if you considered a season (like springtime promising new life, or fall with leaves blowing about, or the bleakness of winter etc.) you could make it a lot more interesting. Try drawing grasses, or flowers, or a hand placing flowers on the grave or something. The text doest work either. Better to hand draw the whole thing. The portraits are nice, and the style is cheerful but still respectful. The shapes around their heads seem arbitrary. You should think about why youre using a shape. Maybe mimic their form, or make the shape speciffic to their lifes work or something. Think about it and rework them.
