So my original coloring idea (large areas of color and pattern) turned out to look horribly flat and not at all how I imagined, and I'm wondering if it's just because I chose to do it digitally for the sketch or if it is just a bad idea. I'm now going to try painting it out in watercolor and adding it to the pencil sketch, but in the meantime I'm posting the b&w and asking for any suggestions...

I think they look great! Your color/pattern idea is good. I think it might look a little flat due to application, not concept. Do try it again. I also think if the black/grey areas were a little cleaner (like i imagine they will be for the final) it will work out just fine.
